Minors

The department offers a wide range of possibilities for noncontiguous minors. The minor options allow students to study a single regional or national literature, creative writing, or a customized topic defined by the students themselves. All our minors require:

  • Seven courses (28 total units)
  • All courses taken for a letter grade
  • All courses receive C- or higher grade
  • Advanced Placement (AP) scores that provide P/NP credit for Literature courses may apply to the minor requirements. Contact advising (via the VAC) if you have any questions.

We recommend taking at least 2 courses before you declare a minor, to ensure it is something you want to pursue. When you are ready to declare your minor, you can do so online using the Major/Minor Tool in TritonLink. Please refer to the specific minor details below for more information and sample minor declaration forms.

LT29 - French Literature

  • If students take less lower division courses - due to placing directly into LTFR 2B or 2C, for example - they will need to list additional upper division LTFR courses to meet the minimum course/unit total.  Many of our upper division LTFR courses may be taken more than once for credit - see Catalog for details.

Pre-Approved Petition Options

If there are European Literature course offerings (LTEU 100-190) that focus on French topics and the course instructor agrees to have French Literature minors do the readings and assignments in French, then the course may apply to the minor. As long as the instructor confirms that the students did the coursework in French, this will be approved.

French Literature minors may also apply one 4-unit LTFR 199 (independent study) to the upper division minor requirements, if a faculty member agrees to supervise such a course.

Students must still complete and send an Undergraduate Petition to litug@ucsd.edu for processing, but these petitions will be automatically approved.

Petitions for additional LTFR 199 courses to apply to minor requirements are not pre-approved.  They will be considered on a case-by-case basis, and they will typically only be approved when there are insufficient upper division LTFR course offerings within the student's projected graduation timeline.

Additional Course Options

Each quarter there may be one or more courses in other Literature subject codes (LTCS or LTWL, for instance) that are flagged as "LTEN-Equivalent", based on the specific topic.  These courses will have a notation at the end of their course descriptions on our Course Offerings page.  For example: "LTWL 184 will count as an LTEN-equivalent course."  These courses do not need to be petitioned to apply to the minor requirements.  If one of these courses isn't applying to the minor as expected, students should send us a message via the VAC.  We will correct their audit.

Pre-Approved Petition Options

Literatures in English minors may also apply one 4-unit LTEN 199 (independent study) to the upper division minor requirements, if a faculty member agrees to supervise such a course. Students must still complete and send an Undergraduate Petition to litug@ucsd.edu for processing, but the petition will be automatically approved.

LT38 - Literatures of the World

Requirements:

The Literatures of the World minor is unique in that it allows students to define their own focus of the minor (for topics not already covered by one of our other minors). It requires seven courses (at least 28 units total), five of which (20 units) must be upper division:

  • Eligible lower division courses (up to two courses from any one of the following sequences):
    • CAT 1, 2, 3
    • DOC 1, 2, 3
    • HUM 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
    • MMW 11, 12, 13, 14, 15

    • LTWL 19A, 19B, 19C
  • Eligible upper division courses (within the parameters below): LT** 100-190
    • At least five upper division courses, which must fit into a single unifying theme/focus.  Some tips for choosing a theme:
      •  It should be narrow enough that it is clearly a subset of the courses we offer and not something that most of our courses could fit within.
      • It should be broad enough that you have built in flexibility for course selection and there will be sufficient course offerings for you to complete the minor in a timely manner.
      • For example,
        • "Comparative World Literature" - too broad
        • "Modern Chinese Lit & Film" - too narrow
        • "East Asian Lit & Film" - just right

Minor declaration process:

  1. Send us a message in the VAC with your chosen theme for the minor.  For example:
    Hi Literature,
I am ready to declare a Literatures of the World minor, and my chosen theme is "East Asian Lit & Film".  I will submit the minor declaration next.  Thank you!
  2. Submit your proposed course list via the Major/Minor Tool in TritonLink.  Feel free to list more than the minimum number of upper division courses, to give yourself multiple options. It is recommended that you refer to the list of courses being offered in the upcoming quarters (Course Offerings), rather than all relevant courses from the Catalog.  You can add more courses later, if needed. All courses must clearly fit into your defined theme.

Sample Minor Declaration:

Course Level Subject Course No. Title Institution Units Grade
Lower DOC 2 Justice UCSD 6 Letter
Lower DOC 3 Imagination UCSD 6 Letter
Upper LTEA 120A Chinese Films UCSD 4 Letter
Upper LTEA 120B Taiwan Films UCSD 4 Letter

Upper LTEA 143 Gender and Sexuality in Korean Literature and Culture UCSD 4 Letter
Upper LTEA 152B Topics in Filipino Literature and Culture (World War II-Present) UCSD 4 Letter

Notes:

  • Once the minor has been approved, our advisors will add your approved course list to the minor options on the degree audit.  If students want to add more courses to their approved options, the will send us a message in the VAC with the details.  As long as the courses clearly fit within your theme, we will add them as options on your degree audit. For example:
    Hi Literature,
My chosen theme for the Literatures of the World minor is "East Asian Lit & Film".  I would like to add the following courses to my approved options: LTEA 141, LTEA 142, LTEA 144, and LTCH 101.  Thank you!
  • If students choose to take less lower division courses, they will need to complete additional upper division courses to meet the minimum course/unit total.  All upper division courses for the minor need to fit within the chosen theme. Many of our upper division courses may be taken more than once for credit - see Catalog for details.
