Yuchen Yan is a 5th-year PhD candidate from the Department of Literature, UC San Diego, focusing on modern and contemporary Chinese literature and cultural studies. Her research focuses on urban literary studies, literature of health and body, and narratives of the fantastic and grotesque. She is currently working on her dissertation titled “This Also is Life: Navigating Narratives of Drug Use in Republican China (1840-1949),” in which she traces narratives of drug use beyond the clinical settings and examines their power in shaping larger political and cultural landscapes.
