Tips for Transfer Students
Academic Advising at UC San Diego is shared by two sets of advisors: College (Eighth, Muir, Marshall, Revelle, Roosevelt, Seventh, Sixth, and Warren College) and Major/Minor (Departments/Programs).
As your Literature advisors, you may contact us for any questions related to your Literature major(s) or minor(s). This can include:
- Major and minor requirements
- Double majoring
- Prerequisites and enrollment
- Course planning
- Honors program
- Independent research opportunities
- Study abroad
- Other department resources and opportunities, etc.
Before Enrolling in the 1st Quarter
In registering for your first quarter (as a Literature major), please follow the steps below:
- Step 1: Review the template academic plan for your major/college combination on Academic Plans (ucsd.edu). Also, view the major checklist (Majors). Together, these items should help you to determine the courses needed in order to complete your major.
- Step 2: Check Assist, the official source for articulation and student transfer information. You will see how your lower division courses transfer. If you took a course that does not appear on Assist and you think it is equivalent to one of your major requirement courses, you can file an undergraduate student petition for review.
- Please check your transfer record on TritonLink. Are all the courses you took listed? Are the UC San Diego equivalent courses listed beside the courses you took? If you took a course and it does not appear on your TritonLink record, please contact the Admission's Office for corrections. If a lower-division course appears, but does not show a UC San Diego equivalent, you may file an undergraduate student petition for consideration.
- If you would like to submit any petitions, please fill out a petition form (Undergrad Petition) and email the completed form and the course syllabus to litug@ucsd.edu for review.
- Step 3: Once you have determined which UC San Diego major courses you have completed, take a look at the Literature courses offered for the fall quarter using the Schedule of Classes. You can also view the approved course offerings that meet each of your major requirements in the "Courses for Literature Major Requirements" section of our website (Course Offerings (ucsd.edu)).
Please keep in mind that all Literature majors have a "Secondary Language & Literature" requirement. Depending on your choice of language and the amount of previous knowledge/coursework you have in that language, you will take anywhere between zero and six courses to complete this requirement. You can view the pre-approved language options and their required courses on the Majors page. Please plan your time at UC San Diego accordingly, and please contact us if you have questions about the required courses. As a transfer student, no matter which language you are choosing, it is strongly recommended that you take an appropriate course in that language sequence during your first quarter at UCSD.
Course Planning
As students will have a variety of transfer coursework credit and multiple choices for the language requirement, there are many paths to completing your major or minor requirements. We highly recommend that you use the Degree Planner tool to map out your specific course plans. Once you save a plan, you can contact us to request that we review it and provide you feedback and suggestions. We are here to help!
