Note: International students and non-California residents are charged a supplemental nonresident fee---see section on Nonresident Fee below.

Supplemental Nonresident Fee

Students who are not California residents for tuition purposes must pay a supplemental nonresident fee of approximately $15,100 per year. Refer to Criteria to Establish Residence for Tuition Purposes to see which of the following best describes your residency status:

  • You qualify as a California resident and are exempt from paying the nonresident fee.
  • You do not qualify as a resident but are eligible to apply for a waiver of the nonresident fee.
  • You do not qualify as a resident; you will owe the nonresident fee during your first year in the program but are eligible to establish residency to avoid the fee in subsequent years.
  • You do not qualify as a resident and are not eligible to obtain a waiver or establish residency.

The nonresident fee is not reduced by teaching assistant or reader fee remissions as illustrated in the chart below. However, some fellowships cover the nonresident fee. See Funding for more information.
