Sections and Areas of Concentration

Although doctoral study at UC San Diego involves work throughout the department, many graduate students center their research on traditional language areas, which are represented in the various sections. An increasing number of graduate students also work in areas of departmental strength that cut across sectional boundaries.

Prospective students apply to one of the six sections, but should also indicate in their statement of purpose if they have particular research interests in one or more of the department’s additional areas of concentration.
