Jack Behar

Associate Professor Emeritus - American Literature
Ph.D. (Ohio State)

It is with sadness that I communicate the passing, on June 25, 2017, of Jack Behar, Professor Emeritus of American Literature/British Literature. Born in 1929, Professor Behar was recruited in 1964 by Roy Harvey Pearce, his PhD mentor at Ohio State University, to join UC San Diego and became one of the founding members of our department. He served as the Section Head for English and, along with other founding members such as Andy Wright and David Crowne, helped build our department as a unique Literature program in the world. He was an effective teacher and insightful commentator on modern English and American literature. Professor Behar worked at UCSD until his retirement in 1991. He is survived by his sons Samuel and Adam.

Please join us as we send our heartfelt condolences to Professor Behar’s family and friends.

Sincerely,

Yingjin Zhang
Chair, Department of Literature
