Information regarding Wireless Access
(This information is for Literature Affiliates
only. If you are not an affiliate of the Literature Department please check
here:
http://blink.ucsd.edu/Blink/External/Topics/Policy/0,1162,1773,00.html)
In order to use UCSD Wireless you will need a computing device (e.g., laptop,
PDA) with a wireless adapter card that supports the IEEE 802.11b standard. Many
new computers, especially MACs have wireless (called Airport) built in OR you
can purchase adapter cards at the
UCSD Bookstore, computer stores, or Web sites.
Rules of Conduct:
- Each person is responsible for setting up his/her own computer -- Debbie
cannot provide technical support for personal computers (she can only apply
on your behalf for an wireless IP address).
- The department is NOT responsible for theft of personal computers (or any
equipment for that matter). If you
bring your computer on campus you are solely responsible for it. There are
inexpensive, effective laptop security cables at the bookstore or local
computer stores that you can buy.
- Read the ACS Acceptable Practices web site at:
http://acs.ucsd.edu/lib/aup.shtml
- Familiarize yourself with Network Security at
http://www-no.ucsd.edu/security/.
You are required to keep your computer "fully patched" with the latest
operating system updates, have a host-based firewall and have up-to-date virus software installed.
If your computer is compromised, Network Operations will block your internet
access, and you will not be able to reapply for access again until you have
cleaned your machine.
- In addition, there are wireless policies at:
http://blink.ucsd.edu/Blink/External/Topics/Policy/0,1162,1768,00.html
and a wireless FAQ at
http://www-no.ucsd.edu/wireless/faq/index.html#register.
If you are only on campus for short period of time and do not have a UCSD
network account, you can ask for an Occasional Use Wireless Account. There are
two locations on campus where you can pickup a username and password:
- Combined ACS/ ACT Help Desk, AP&M 1313 (map),
8 a.m. — 4:30 p.m., weekdays
- Art of Espresso coffee cart on the south side of
Mandeville Auditorium (map),
days and hours of operation vary
Or you can call the ACS Help Desk at (858) 534-1853.
A temporary password is good until the end of the month (so, whether you get
a temporary account on the 1st of the month or the 29th, it's only good
until the end of that month).
If you are on campus for a longer period of time and want to use the wireless
network you should signup for a UCSD Network account and register your computer:
There are two ways:
Option #1 -- On your own:
If you already
have a UCSD network account you can sign up for a Wireless account online at:
http://www-no.ucsd.edu/ono-cgi-bin/etherform/wirelessform.pl
If you know you have a UCSD network account but forgot/need to reset your
network username and password:
Option #2 -- have Debbie help you:
If you are not sure if you have a UCSD network account, or need help please send email to dmorrow@ucsd.edu with
the following information:
- Name
- UCSD Affiliation (visitor, graduate student,
etc).
- Employee ID number, Student ID number or
Passport Number
- Email Address
- Computer type (MAC or PC)
- Operating System (i.e. Windows 95, MAC X,
etc.)
- Ethernet Address (sometimes called a MAC address
- very important!). This is a 12-digit
hex address that is associated with your wireless card. It is often
broken up into 2 character segments with dashes in between (ie.
00-11-22-AA-BB-CC). To find your network address:
- Windows 95/98/2000/XP:
To find the MAC
address, click the Start button and then click Run.
Type cmd in the Run box and in the new
window, type ipconfig /all. Look for the IP
configuration for your wireless Adapter (you will probably have more
than one adapter, i.e. ethernet, wireless, etc.). Look for the
Physical Address information.
- Macintosh X:
To find the MAC
address, open the Apple menu (blue apple icon at top left
corner of screen), select System Preferences, and click the
Network icon. Open the Show drop-down menu and
select Apple Airport. Look for the 12 digit Airport ID
found under the Airport tab.
After you have emailed your request to Debbie she will fill out the necessary
form and send it to Network
Operations to request a Wireless IP address on your behalf. Wireless accounts
are usually assigned within 48 hours (not including weekends).
Documentation on how to setup your computer can be found here:

That's it!
