Get ConnectedI have a computer or PDA at home and want to check UCSD email. How do I get started? First, you need an ISP (Internet Service Provider) account. Different ISPs require different hardware. For example, a cable modem or DSL usually requires an ethernet, USB or wireless connection, dialup requires a modem. The short list of ISP companies in San Diego are AOL (http://www.aol.com), SBC Yahoo DSL (http://sbc.yahoo.com), Earthlink (http://www.earthlink.net), Roadrunner (http://www.san.rr.com) and UCSD (http://www-no.ucsd.edu/dialinfo/dialinfo.html) (a master list can be found at http://www.thelist.com). Second, you need to configure your computer according to your ISP's network requirements (i.e. DHCP, SMTP, etc). Documentation can be found here http://www-ono.ucsd.edu/documentation/ . I am a Literature affiliate and I have my own computer and would like to connect to the Internet with an Ethernet Cable. Every office and seminar room in the Literature building has an Ethernet port that is activated -- it is usually numbered 1A. Check out our web page at http://literature.ucsd.edu/compinfo/ipreg1.html to get started. Note: The Department is not responsible for personal equipment left in offices - lock it! What about wireless? I have a PDA and/or laptop and I want to use wireless in the building or around campus. UCSD Wireless Overview: |
