Getting StartedHow do I get started? Check out the ACS Home Page at http://www-acs.ucsd.edu I am a Literature graduate student. How do I get a student mail account? You can register yourself online at:
http://sdacs.ucsd.edu/~icc/acsreg.php. I am a Literature Faculty/Non-Senate Faculty or Visiting Scholar. How do I get an (email) account? There are two ways: Debbie can setup your account for you -- simply fill out and return to the Literature Building room 123 a Literature Computer Services Application: http://literature.ucsd.edu/compinfo/compapp.html. Please allow 3 working days to process your application. Or ... Stop by the ACS help desk Get ConnectedI have a computer or PDA at home and want to check UCSD email. How do I get started? First, you need an ISP (Internet Service Provider) account. Different ISPs require different hardware. For example, a cable modem or DSL usually requires an ethernet, USB or wireless connection, dialup requires a modem. The short list of ISP companies in San Diego are AOL (http://www.aol.com), SBC Yahoo DSL (http://sbc.yahoo.com), Earthlink (http://www.earthlink.net), Roadrunner (http://www.san.rr.com) and UCSD (http://www-no.ucsd.edu/dialinfo/dialinfo.html) (a master list can be found at http://www.thelist.com). Second, you need to configure your computer according to your ISP's network requirements (i.e. DHCP, SMTP, etc). Documentation can be found here http://www-ono.ucsd.edu/documentation/ . I am a Literature affiliate and I have my own computer and would like to connect to the Internet with an Ethernet Cable. Every office and seminar room in the Literature building has an Ethernet port that is activated -- it is usually numbered 1A. Check out our web page at http://literature.ucsd.edu/compinfo/ipreg1.html to get started. Note: The Department is not responsible for personal equipment left in offices - lock it! What about wireless? I have a PDA and/or laptop and I want to use wireless in the building or around campus. UCSD Wireless Overview: IMPORTANT: ALL computers connected to
the UCSD network must comply with UCSD Minimum Security Standards: How can I access UCSD Library resources from off-campus? UCSD Libraries Remote Access: http://libraries.ucsd.edu/services/remote.html Where are computer labs on campus? ACS handles the computer labs on campus and location/service information can be found at: http://acs.ucsd.edu/students/#labs Who can use the Literature computer room? The Literature Department computer room is for Literature Affiliates (Faculty, NSF, Graduate Students and Visiting Scholars). The computer room has Mac Minis with XP installed and two 'pay-as-you-go" printers, a scanner and a typewriter. You need a personal omnilock code in order to enter the room which you can obtain by completing a Literature Computer Services Application. Please allow 2 working days for your application to be processed. The Literature computer room is intended for users that are already familiar with PC and/or MAC, printing, word processing, and internet basics -- we cannot provide onsite training, and equipment is repaired as time permits. The computer room is "as is". We recommend that you signup for a Laser Printing Account "just in case". This account allows you to print laser quality printouts from one of the ACS computer lab printers. The Literature department cannot be held responsible for printer or computer "down time". Help! I have a personal computer that has been compromised and now I cannot use the internet in my office! Getting your computer back online is a multi-departmental process, and you will need time and patience. Depending on how serious the intrusion, you may have to wipe out your computer completely and reinstall the operating system. Your computer must meet the UCSD minimum Security Standards before it can be brought back online. After your computer meets these standards, you will need to (1) Contact Debbie and let her know that your computer is "clean", (2) when she instructs you, connect your computer to the internet and leave it on (you may have to leave it on for several hours so be sure that "sleep" is off and have power connected if you have a laptop) (2) Debbie will ask the UCSD Security team to scan your computer to make sure that it is clean. When the scan has been completed Debbie will contact you with the results. Email and ListservI already have an email account from my own ISP. Do I need a UCSD account too? There are two parts to having a UCSD account -- one is having a UCSD account which consists of a username and password and allows you access to dialup services, a laser printer account, Active Directory, etc., the other is a "@ucsd.edu" email account which is basically an address associated with your UCSD Account that you use to check email. Usually your "UCSD" and "@ucsd.edu" address look similiar (ie. Joe Doe's UCSD account would be "jdoe" and his email address would be "jdoe@ucsd.edu". ) UCSD account:
